News from NACPRO
Update on 2021 NACPRO Programs At the December meeting the Board of Directors decided not to conduct a summer meeting in 2021. Many park districts have cut their travel budgets and there’s still too much uncertainty about when it will be safe for us to gather again. We are hoping to resume our summer meeting in 2022. The 2021 Awards Program will go forward this year. The Call for Nominations will come out later in January. Since we are not having an in-person meeting this year, the awards will be shipped directly to the recipients and NACPRO will develop an awards presentation video that you can share with your staff and community. Amendment to the NACPRO Bylaws The NACPRO Board of Directors proposes to amend the NACPRO bylaws to clarify certain sections, to change some overly restrictive sections, and to update other sections to current practices. Two important changes allow the Board to conduct their Annual Meeting virtually, and to approve amendments to the bylaws at any Board meeting (currently limited to approval at the Annual Meeting). Click on the link below to download a copy of the draft amendment. Changes are noted in red ink and comments in the margin provide rationale. https://nacpro.memberclicks.net/assets/docs/NACPRO-Bylaws-DRAFT-121520.docx If you have any feedback on this amendment, please send your comments to [email protected] by February 12, 2021.

Are synthetic-turf systems contributing to the microplastics crisis? Courtesy of Parks and Recreation Business
By Thomas P. Shay
Most third-generation, synthetic-turf fields installed worldwide use some form of rubber as a significant component of infill. Typically, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) is used as a cost-effective synthetic, often referred to as crumb rubber. Other virgin rubber and plastic alternatives include ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) or thermoplastic elastomers (TPE).
SBR is often sourced from worn-out automobile-tire waste and diverted to synthetic-turf fields for infill. The substance is a low-cost material that has been historically suitable for field surfacing with particles approximately 1 to 2 millimeters in size. However, the particulate nature of SBR means it is easily carried away from synthetic fields by athletes on shoes, clothing, equipment, hair, or skin, and this requires replenishment. Some of the crumb rubber can be found in perimeter areas surrounding synthetic-turf fields, especially when snow removal is conducted on the turf as part of maintenance.
